Make sure your boat is properly equipped before going on the water.

• Lifejacket or buoyancy aid: please ensure that you and all members on board have the correct safety equipment. Wearing a life jacket could save a life.
• On board: wet weather gear when needed, suitable footwear & ensure you don’t get dehydrated in the warmer weather.
• Wear your kill cord: if you are on an open powerboat or RIB make sure you wear the kill cord.
• Carbon Monoxide: often dubbed the ‘Silent Killer’, Carbon Monoxide can kill quickly if inhaled in high concentrations. Check your fuel burning devices are safe. Install a carbon monoxide alarm.

 

Advice to Safe use for your ladder

 

Within the marine industry, every winter large numbers of yachts are lifted ashore. Many owners require access whilst on the hard, the chosen method is by ladder. It is common practice to provide your own ladder. Below are some guideline to keep you safe whilst accessing your boat.

 

1. Check your ladder before you use it.
• Check the stiles are not split or bent.
• Check the rungs are secure and not damaged or cracked.
• Check the non-slip feet are present.
• Checking the locking mechanism operates.
2. Place the ladder at an angle of 1:4
3. Secure the ladder so that both stiles are tied.
4. Extend the ladder at least 1m above the deck level to provide a handhold.
5. Maintain 3 point of contact with the ladder.
6. Avoid holding items when climbing ladders.
Consider using a rope too pull item up onto deck.
7. Do not overreach if working from the ladder.
